With
the growing awareness of all things environmental in the UK today, there is a
corresponding growth in interest in alternatives At the same time, laws
governing emissions from crematoriums are becoming progressively more strict.
Naturally the caskets used in such places are expected to have extremely green
credentials.
How does bamboo fit the bill? To begin with, it is the fastest growing plant on
earth. When cut down at root level its stems grow back to their original height
within five months without the need for replanting. In spite of this, cropping
of bamboo is carried out during only part of the year. Thus allowing each
cropped area ample time for growth. Minimum treatment is used during the
preparation stage. The bamboo is soaked for 24 hours in a non-toxic salt
solution to prevent woodworm, but receives no other treatment or finishes. Our
caskets therefore contain even fewer toxic chemicals than the pet itself. This,
together with the fact that bamboo is a readily combustible material, makes our
caskets ideal for cremation as well as burial.
Our caskets are woven entirely by hand without the use of power tools. Besides
giving our caskets their distinctive handcrafted appeal this means that almost
no fossil-fuelled energy is used in their production.
